Four Rules for Safe Photo Shoots

Welcome to the fabulous and vibrant world of modeling! As thrilling as it can be to strike a pose in front of the camera with the spotlight shining on you, it’s essential to ensure your safety and comfort during every photoshoot. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newbie just dipping your toes into the sparkling pool of high-fashion modeling, we’ve got a few essential tips that are as important as your smile. Let’s dive right in!

I am calling these “rules” because they are non-negotiable when it comes to your well-being. So, let’s discuss the four vital rules to follow when working with a photographer.

Research the Photographer

Before agreeing to work with a photographer, thoroughly research their background, reputation, and portfolio. Look for reviews, testimonials, and feedback from other models who have worked with them. This will help you gauge their professionalism and ensure they have a track record of treating models with respect.

When researching a photographer, watch out for these red flags:

  • Unprofessional conduct, such as making inappropriate comments or advances in person or online and texts. This behavior is a big NO and should never be tolerated.
  • Negative reviews or feedback from other models. If there are consistent complaints about a photographer’s behavior, take it as a warning sign and steer clear.
  • Not tagging models in their work. This is a common courtesy and shows that the photographer values and respects the models they work with. It also allows shows that the photographer is taking ownership of their work and wants to promote the models they’ve collaborated with. Lastly, you can easily contact models they’ve worked with in the past and ask about their experience.

Set Clear Boundaries

Clearly communicate your boundaries and expectations with the photographer before the shoot. Discuss the concept, wardrobe, poses, and any specific limitations you have. If something makes you uncomfortable during the shoot, don’t hesitate to speak up and assert your boundaries.

Tips for setting expectations before a shoot:

  • Have a clear contract or agreement that outlines the details of the shoot, such as time, location, payment, and usage rights.
  • Discuss any sensitive areas you do not want to be photographed or would like edited out during retouching (e.g., scars, birthmarks).
  • Make sure your privacy is respected when sharing images on social media or other platforms.

Have a Support System

Always bring a trusted friend, family member, or fellow model with you to the shoot as a safety companion. Their presence can provide an extra layer of security and support throughout the entire process.

Examples of unprofessional escorts or safety companions:

  • A friend who is not supportive and makes you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable.
  • Someone who tries to take over and dictate what you should or shouldn’t do during the shoot. Remember, it’s your career, and you have the final say in what you’re comfortable with.
  • A significant other who becomes jealous or controlling during the shoot. This can cause unnecessary tension.

Trust Your Instincts

Pay attention to your intuition and listen to your instincts. If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, trust those feelings and take action accordingly. Your safety and well-being should always be your top priority.

Things to keep an eye out for:

  • A photographer who disregards your boundaries or makes you feel pressured to do something you’re not comfortable with.
  • A shoot location that doesn’t feel safe or suitable for the type of shoot you agreed upon.
  • Any signs of unprofessionalism or inappropriate behavior from the photographer during the shoot.

Conclusion

Now, don’t get us wrong – most photographers are professional and respectful individuals who genuinely want to create beautiful images with you. But as in any industry, there are always a few bad apples, and knowing how to protect yourself is essential. Remember these rules, have fun, and always prioritize your safety and well-being while pursuing your modeling dreams. Happy posing!
